How does a Multi-Day Course work?

A Multi-Day Course meets multiple times over one or more weeks. Learners join the teacher in live video chat sessions at scheduled times. Outside of these sessions, they can take part in a classroom discussion group and message the teacher directly. Longer courses create more opportunities: real-time activities, engaging projects, and interaction with diverse classmates from other states and countries.

Description

Class Experience

Students will be introduced to a unique concept of doing calculations on Abacus and as a result, mentally. They will learn basic calculations on Abacus, involving 1,2,3,4 digit numbers, do mental calculations based on this concept and visual exercises. We will also play logic games and do other fun intellectual things. The classes are very engaging and fun! Students love the idea of seeing numbers in a new way that allows them to be faster and use Abacus or their mental math skills!

Students will learn the basics on how to use an abacus. We will count together and count by ones, twos, threes, and tens. We will do some basic addition and subtraction with the abacus beads. We will play some simple learning games with the abacus. We will also sing some counting games to learn how to count in multiples. The abacus is a calculating tool that has been used for centuries and is a fun way to learn math. Children will need an abacus for this class.

I engage with every student when teaching and pay close attention to how well each of them understands the topic and the new skill. In my classes we all enjoy the process of learning. In this process students understand that math can be so much fun!

Students will develop their math skills by counting, regrouping (exchanging beads), place value to 100, and how to "set" and "clear" numbers on the abacus. Learners will have a better understanding of all of these concepts and should be able to add single digit numbers (with regrouping), add 2 digit by 2 digit, and 3 digit by 3 digit numbers (without regrouping). And... of course, math these days is all about application, not just calculations.

Students will learn the basics on how to use a school abacus / classic wooden abacus. We will count together and count by ones, twos, threes, and tens. We will do some basic addition and subtraction with the abacus beads.

Students will participate visually and tactually to improve their basic math skills and concepts by manipulating the beads. Students will develop their math skills by counting (by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's, and 100's!), regrouping (exchanging beads), practicing their "10 friends", place value to 100, and how to "set" and "clear" numbers on the abacus. By the end of Day 3, learners will have a better understanding of all of these concepts and should be able to add single digit numbers (with regrouping), add 2 digit by 2 digit, and 3 digit by 3 digit numbers (without regrouping). And... of course, math these days is all about application, not just calculations, so we will have some silly made up "story problems" for learners to solve.

Will be informed in the classroom.

Will be assessed in the classroom by the teacher.

Please assist the child while the class is on.
